  "dataset_description": "<p align=\"justify\">\nThis dataset provides information on crude steelmaking capacity for 132 OECD Member\ncountries and non-OECD economies over the period 2000–2025.\n</p>\n\n<h3>Definitions</h3>\n\n<h4>Steelmaking capacity</h4>\n<p align=\"justify\">\nNominal crude steelmaking capacity is defined as the maximum theoretical\noutput of installed steelmaking equipment. This definition does not account\nfor yield losses, maintenance downtime, or other factors affecting actual\nproduction. As a result, the steelmaking capacity figures provided by the\nOECD should not be interpreted as effective capacity.\nCapacity is expressed in million metric tonnes (mmt). Annual capacity figures reflect all\nsteelmaking capacity existing at the end of each calendar year.\n</p>\n\n<h4>Steelmaking equipment</h4>\n<p align=\"justify\">\nSteelmaking equipment includes all equipment used to produce crude steel.\nThe definition excludes ironmaking equipment, which is considered upstream,\nas well as casting, rolling, and finishing equipment, which are considered\ndownstream.\nSpecifically, crude steelmaking equipment includes electric arc furnaces\n(EAF), induction furnaces (IF) and\nLD basic oxygen furnaces (BOF).\n</p>\n\n<h3>Methodology</h3>\n<p align=\"justify\">\nSteelmaking capacity developments are derived from data on existing\ncapacity, investments, and closures. Capacity changes reflect new additions\nand permanent closures and therefore represent net changes.\nIn some cases, capacity may be overestimated due to the assumption that\nprojects classified as underway with expired start dates have become\noperational. Only permanent closures are included in capacity calculations,\nalthough some closures cannot be clearly classified due to limited \navailable information.\n</p>\n\n<h3>Data sources</h3>\n<p align=\"justify\">\nOECD calculations based on desk research, company websites, publicly\navailable news sources and information exchanges within the OECD Steel\nCommittee.\n</p>\n\n<h3>Cite this dataset</h3>\n<p>\nOECD (2025). <i>Crude steelmaking capacity</i> dataset.
